What is Sequestration and How Will it Affect Schools and Health Care?
The complex process of sequestration as a part of the federal budget process in the next couple years, and the impact on local communities, LEAs and states is explained in two documents shared by NAME’s partner, the National Association of State Directors of Special Education (NASDSE). The information from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is brief, valuable and easy-to-digest. Entitled, “How the Across-the-Board Cuts in the Budget Control Act Will Work”, it summarizes the budget cuts of a sequestration process that mandates across-the-board cuts in both defense and non-defense discretionary programs as well as some entitlement programs (e.g., Medicare). See it here: www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=3635.
A second document from the National Education Association is more detailed because it contains information about specific USED programs with data on the impact of sequestration on a state-by-state basis, and is here: www.nea.org/assets/docs/Updated_Impact_of_BCA_Sequestration_including_State_Tables.pdf
